Mrs. Laura Virdell Smith Smallwood, 96, of Gainesville passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016.
Born on April 2, 1919, she was a lifelong resident of Hall County. She was the daughter of the late John Wiley (Wild) and JoAnna Truelove Smith. She was a member of Dewberry Baptist Church #2.
In addition to her parents, Virdell was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Sherman Smallwood and daughter, Sharon Hindman. Virdell was the last survivor of a family of 16 children (10 boys and 6 girls).
Virdell is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Shirley and Ross Allison, Shelby and Dennis Hicks all of Gainesville; grandchildren, Jasen Allison of Gainesville, Kim Shaw of Anderson, SC, Ashley Hindman of Chester, SC, Denisha Waldrop of Gainesville, Alex Hicks of Gainesville; 9 great-grandchildren, Will Fowler, Lacey and Kayla Burns, Chelsea and Hannah Allison, Elisa, Emily and Beau Hindman, Bryson Hicks and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Baker will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Little & Davenport Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
