Maggie Lee Harrison, age 81, of Commerce, GA peacefully departed this life at The Oaks of Athens Nursing Home on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. Maggie was born to the late Harold and Thelma Varnum on October 20, 1934. She was part of a large and loving family as the oldest daughter of 12 children. She was married to the late Bunyon Harrison, Jr. for 60 plus years. She was a faithful member of Hurricane Grove Baptist Church and actively served in many positions. She was a Deaconess, a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the cooking ministry, and a teacher during VBS; Matron’s Circle, Usher Board Ministry and many more.
Maggie, who was affectionately known as “Darby” and “Nanny” was a very special lady! She was very talented in many areas/occupations, such as cooking, gardening, sewing, quilting, cross stitchery, canning, caring for babies, immaculateness, storytelling, 500 plus piece jigsaw puzzles/assembler, care taker of adults, the Nanny of many non-family children, caring sister, devoted wife, loving mother, and SO MUCH MORE. She was a women who truly loved the Lord and shared many words of wisdom to others in very colorful stories. She adored her grandchildren and was always her children’s greatest supporter.
“Nanny” was preceded in death by her sons, Timothy and Rogers Harrison; and her beloved husband, Bunyon Harrison, Jr.
Remaining to cherish her memories are a daughter, Debra Kay Rucker (Steve) of Commerce, Gregory Harrison (Debra) of Greenville SC; grandchildren, Christopher Rucker (Ashley), Alexis Harrison, and Isaiah Harrison; great grandchildren, Korie Kate and Harper Leigh Rucker; brothers, H.T. (Sue) Varnum of Thomasville NC, Luther Varnum of Thomasville NC, Harold Varnum of Commerce , David (Dorothy) Varnum of Commerce , James (Helen) Varnum of Commerce , Tom Varnum of Commerce; sisters, Margie Clerk of Hinesville GA, Mary Sue (Samuel) Grimes of McDonough GA, Linda Faye Cochran of Gainesville GA, Helen Morris of Athens, and the late Betty Jean (James) Morris of Gainesville GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Friday, February 26 from Hurricane Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Hurricane Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday night from 6 to 7 PM.
