Douglas Shelton                               Toccoa, Georgia

 

Mr. Joseph Douglas Shelton, age 68 of Toccoa, Georgia passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

 

A son of the late Joseph Manston and Mary Jane Cleveland Shelton, he was born March 11, 1947 in Stephens County, Georgia where he lived most of his life.  He was a retired Tech Sergeant, Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served his country 20 years and retired in 1987. While in the Air Force, he traveled all four corners of the globe.  He enjoyed volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army and Toccoa Nursing Center.  He loved carpentry, farming, working with horses and other animals. He spent a lot of time at Whitlock Scrap Metal. Some of his passions included providing and helping his family and being of service to others and going to Long Creek and enjoying Blue Grass Music.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Delores Payne Shelton, two brothers, Roger and Jack Shelton and by a sister, Reta Fay Shelton.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Pamila Delores Besaw (Tobey McIntyre) of Toccoa; three sons and daughter-in-law, Patrick Cody Shelton, Dustin Arthur Shelton and Joseph Douglas Shelton, Jr. and wife Crystal all of Toccoa; eleven grandchildren, Samantha, Bradley, Alorah, Kaleigh, Faith, Eryn, Gabriella, George Lee, Tommy Britney and Randy; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Joe Terrell Shelton of Toccoa; two sisters, Mattie Jane and Richard Smalko of Niagara Falls, New York and Renee and Troy Smith of Kokomo, Indiana; sister-in-law, Debbie Shelton of Easley, South Carolina; special companion, Betty Carolyn Durden of Toccoa; countless nieces, nephews and close friends.

 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 26, 2016. 2 O’clock PM at Rock Creek Baptist Church with The Reverend David Shelton officiating. 

 

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers and should assemble at the funeral home by 1:00 PM, William Whitlock, Paul Whitlock, James Cleveland, Bruce Cleveland, Jeff Whitlock, Marshal Covington, Jeff Mitchell and David Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be Walt Garrett and Josh Shelton.

 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Monday from 5 PM to 8 PM.  Online condolences can be made by visiting the website at www.acree-davisfh.com.

 

Interment will follow in Rock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.  Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Joseph Douglas Shelton.
