M.E. “Red” Cantrell

M.E. “Red” Cantrell, 89, of Gainesville passed away Monday, January 11, 2016.

Born on January 9, 1927, he was a lifetime resident of Hall County. He was the son of the late John Milford and Nora Lee Dover Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell was a graduate of Gainesville High School and the Atlanta Law School. He was a member of Kiwanis, Elks club, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Mr. Cantrell was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines.

 Mr. Cantrell retired from the City of Gainesville. He began his career in 1954 as a firefighter. Other positions held with the City of Gainesville were Director of the Gainesville Department of Housing and Relocation, fire marshal, arson investigator, a city police marshal and a projects manager in the city’s urban renewal project. After retirement with the City of Gainesville, Mr. Cantrell went to work for Hall County where he was Director of Public Works.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra J. Anderson Cantrell.

Mr. Cantrell is survived by his son and daughter in law, Mark and Dawn Cantrell of Cumming; grandsons, Henry Cantrell and Avery Cantrell of Cumming; sister, Evelyn Smith of Gainesville; brother, Haskell Cantrell of Gainesville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. David E. Smith will officiate. Interment will be in AltaVista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
