Bennie Horace Fouts

Bennie Horace Fouts, 79, passed away at home with his family on Sunday, January 10, 2016 following an extended illness.

Ben was born in Gainesville on August 27, 1936. He graduated from Sardis High School in 1954. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1960 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education.  In 1967, he received his Master’s Degree in Education and in 1971 a Specialists in Education all from the University of Georgia. He was an  Educator  for 35 years. He began his career in education as a visiting teacher. He was principal at North Hall High School from 1974-1980; at Lanier Elementary from 1980-1995. He has always been a teacher, a leader and a role model. 

After retiring from education he was a cattle farmer on the family farm for many years. Ben loved the outdoors and all its beauty. He enjoyed hiking, traveling, snow skiing, water skiing and canoeing. Ben was the first documented barefoot skier on Lanier Lanier. He was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church, Hall Co. Retired Educators Association, and Soil and Water Conservation Association.

Mr. Fouts served in the Navy in 1961 after being called into active duty from the Naval Air Reserves during the Berlin Crisis.

Mr. Fouts is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Vera Mae Williams Fouts.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie Jones Fouts; children, Beth Fouts Hintze (Ron) and Barclay (Robin Ricks) Fouts; 5 grandchildren, Brad, Ben and Baileigh Bullard, Jasper and Jesse Fouts.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in the chapel at Gainesville First United Methodist Church. Dr. Terry Walton will officiate. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
