Irwin R. Kimzey, Jr., lifelong resident of northeast Georgia, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016, after an extended illness.
Born August 29, 1940, in the Brewer House in Clarkesville, Georgia, he was the son of the late Honorable Irwin R. Kimzey, Sr. and Marie Hargraves Kimzey of Clarkesville, Georgia.
Mr. Kimzey is survived by his wife Carol Jennings Kimzey, daughter and son-in-law Angela and David C. Smith and granddaughter Caroline of Savannah, Georgia, son Irwin Rabun Kimzey III and granddaughter Kailey of Mt. Airy, Georgia, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Dale Jennings and nieces and nephews of Clarkesville, Georgia.
Mr. Kimzey served in the United States Army, attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Piedmont College. He was retired from Ethicon and IBM. After retirement, he had a private, independent consulting service. Mr. Kimzey was a member of the Clarkesville Methodist Church, a member and consultant for the Habersham Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Helen Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board of directors. He was also a past-president of the Habersham Youth Coaching Association. Mr. Kimzey was a very active fundraiser for the youth of Habersham County. He served on the Habersham County Recreation Board for 15 years and was very instrumental in the construction of the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center in Habersham County.
Known for his contagious smile and love of his family, he also enjoyed spending his time fishing at his home on Lake Burton and on Wilmington Island. He will be truly missed by all who knew his gentle soul.
The family will receive friends at Hillside Memorial Chapel on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
