Mr. Jack Estes, 96 of Gainesville died Sunday December 27, 2015.
Born in Ashland, Alabama, Mr. Estes had lived in Waco, Texas for a number of years before moving to Hall County in 1938. He was the son of the late Roy and Myrtis Bell Estes. He along with his mother owned and operated Paul's Clothing Store in Gainesville for a number of years. Mr. Estes was a graduate of Gainesville High School class of 1940, served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Jack served in the Coast Guard from 1940 until 1945. During that time he served on the USS Spencer. While on convoy patrol in the Atlantic on April 17, 1943 the Spencer sank a German U Boat. This was the first time an enemy vessel had been boarded during wartime in 200 years. Jack was an avid sports enthusiast, having won the Texas State Tennis Championship at a earlier age, while in later years golf became his passion. Mr. Estes was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church on Washington Street.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ophelia Skelton Estes, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David Davis, Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren Davis, Columbus, GA; Hunter and Yong Davis, Murfreesboro, TN; one great grandchild, Charlotte Rose Davis, Columbus; nieces, Joyce Smith (Phillip), Chattanooga, TN; Charlene Cusumano and Jane Estes, both of Gainesville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday December 31, 2015 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. Hugh Skelton and Rev. Allen Skelton will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Calvin Haney officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from noon until 2:00 p.m.
The family of Mr. Estes would like to pass along there sincere gratitude to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center and the Bell-Minor Nursing Home for there care shown to the family and Mr. Estes during his last days.
