Don Edward Fisher

Obituary Date: Saturday, December 19, 2015

Don E. Fisher, 93, of Gainesville passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2015.

Don was born in Pueblo, Colorado on December 16, 1922. He graduated from Miami High School in Miami, Missouri and became a naval aviator in 1943.

After Pearl Harbor, Don joined the Navy as a fighter pilot assigned to training new pilots and also flying as a test pilot. After the war, he stayed in the reserves and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Don attended the University of Florida and in June 1950 graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Don became a successful engineer and was employed by Monsanto. In the course of his employment he obtained numerous patents in the field of mechanical engineering.

Don loved to make things work.  He took pride and great delight in repairing clocks, particularly the tall clocks of his own and for friends.  He was also an accomplished carpenter.  He had a very determined nature and, while doing some carpentry work for his church a few years, he hurt his wrist and lost the dexterity in it. Although Don was told that he would not be able to use it again, being of the stubborn nature that he was, he treated himself with a hammer by rolling it from side to side for exercise and was successful in having complete use and dexterity to return after which he was able to resume his carpentry activities.

Don also loved gardening and was an accomplished gardener and loved to play bridge.  Not only was Don a very accomplished mechanical engineer, gardener and bridge player, he and his wife, Mary Elizabeth were very kind individuals. Friends from Florida who knew Don and Mary Elizabeth before they came to Georgia related that Don and Mary Elizabeth never wanted anyone to be alone. On many occasions when going out to dinner or other activities, they always took either a widowed or divorced friend, showing an interest that everyone should have as full a life as they could.

Our thanks go to Mary Ann and Tom Staples for their comments.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Georgia National Cemetery with Rev. Richard Evans officiating.
