Dr. James Terry Greene, 53, died on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at Atlanta Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1962 in Baldwyn, MS, Dr. Greene was the son of James Davenport Greene of Greensboro, NC and Carolyn McCarley Greene of Clarkesville. He moved to Atlanta as a child and later attended and was the salutatorian of Norcross High School in 1980. In addition to marching in the band and playing on the soccer team, Dr. Greene attained the high honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. Subsequently, Dr. Greene graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Georgia in 1984. He continued his education at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta where he became board certified in Internal Medicine. He served as Chief Resident at MCG from 1991-1992.
Dr. Greene moved to Clarkesville with his wife Anne Jones Greene in 1992 to raise their four children. At the time of his death, he was practicing/owner of Habersham Primary Care. He was appointed as Chief of Staff at Habersham Medical Center from 2010 to 2012. In addition, he served as Doctor of the Day in the Georgia General Assembly; he was awarded Best Doctor by the Northeast Georgian multiple times; and achieved the status of Certified Medical Review Officer by the American Association of Medical Review Officers.
Greene was elected to Clarkesville City Council in 1999 after serving on the city’s planning and zoning commission. Then in 2005, he was elected mayor, a position he held until his death. Greene was a beloved citizen of Clarkesville who was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 23 years, Sons of the American Revolution, the local chapter of the Gideons, and was the Chairman of the Board of Southern Bank and Trust. In his spare time, he enjoyed deer hunting, boating, spending time with family and friends, and watching sports.
In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include daughter Hannah Greene and son Sam Greene of Augusta; daughter Lily Greene and son Mac Greene of Clarkesville; sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Keith Edenfield of Athens, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Andy Jones of Augusta; father-in-law and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Jones of Augusta, nieces and nephews Ansley Edenfield of Atlanta; Clayton Edenfield of Athens; Drew Jones and Kelly Anne Jones of Augusta.
Funeral services for Dr. Greene will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 18th, at River Point Community Church, Demorest, GA. Dr. Bill Cashion and Rev. Tommy Stowe will officiate with interment to follow in the Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Chapel.
