Evans Funeral Home announces the death of Miss Emma Sue Thurmond, age 88 of Commerce, Georgia, formerly of Jefferson, Georgia who entered into rest Wednesday, November 25, 2015. Miss Thurmond was born in Jefferson, Georgia, the daughter of the late C.L. and Rowena Dunson Thurmond, was a graduate of Martin Institute, Class of 1946 and attended Women’s College of Georgia in Milledgeville and Johnson Business College in Athens, Georgia.
Miss Thurmond was the Librarian of the Jefferson Public Library for more than forty years. Established the summer reading program for children in Jefferson and worked tirelessly moving from building to building before the dream of the Jefferson Library being built.
Miss Thurmond is survived by brother; Claudius D. Thurmond and his wife Carolyn of Jefferson, Nephews; Phil Thurmond and his wife Susie, Doug Thurmond and his wife Jackie. Great nephews; Caleb Thurmond and his wife Melissa, Cain Thurmond and his wife Whitney, Cam, Cason, Tanner and Tyson Thurmond and one great, great niece; Ella Kate Thurmond and a special friend; Welton Cronic of Commerce.
Miss Thurmond was a member of the Church of Christ of Lawrenceville, Georgia
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 1, 2015 from the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home, a private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends 1 – 2 P.M. Tuesday, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eagle Ranch, P.O.Box 7200 Chestnut, Mountain, Georgia 30502.
