Loyce Lillian Darnell Smith passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 15th, 2015. Lillian was born June 4, 1931 to Brye L. and Pauline Norton Darnell of the Betty’s Creek community. She was a loving and fun wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her.
Along with her parents, Lillian, was proceeded in death by her brother, Ross Darnell; sisters, Sarah Ann Darnell, Floss D. Sitton, Katherine D. Hyatt and Jacqueline Darnell. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Jack Smith of Lakemont; two daughters, Gail S. Hopper (Rodney) of Lakemont, Tina S. Johnson of Fayetteville, Georgia; a special niece, Cami G. Hopper of Clayton; two granddaughters, Dianna Gail Johnson of Fayetteville, Georgia and Danielle Mary Johnson of Athens, Georgia; a sister, Joyce D. Thompson of Rabun Gap and a brother, Brye “Bud” Darnell, Jr. of Cumming, Georgia. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Lillian’s life was filled with her family, her work and her community. She was the customer service representative for the local telephone company for 33 years. The name of the company may have changed several times in her employment but she was a loyal employee and loved her co-workers. She was a member of the Democratic Party of Rabun County where she served as treasurer for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Besides her love of family she thoroughly enjoyed camping, family gatherings, reading the newspaper(s) and Rabun County High School basketball where she was a loyal fan and supporter. Lillian grew up in the Baptist faith serving in different capacities in her church life. She was a member of Battle Branch Baptist Church where she found joy in the messages and music as long as she could attend.
Visitation to be Tuesday, November 17, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 11:00 at Beck Funeral Home Chapel, Clayton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers the family would like donation made to The Coach Ken Byrd Memorial Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 307, Tiger, Georgia 30576 or the Miley Duvall Memorial Scholarship Fund at 963 Tiger Connector Road, Tiger, Georgia 30576
