Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Ward's Funeral Home Chapel for Dr. Charles Lawrence '”Larry” Andrews, Sr., 77, of Gainesville. The family will receive friends from 11 am till time of the service. Mr. Andrews passed away November 2, 2015.
Mr. Andrews was born in Atlanta in 1938 to the late Charles Gordon and Aldoris (Williams) Andrews. Larry, along with his sister Sandra, grew up together in Atlanta until he joined the navy as a flight navigator and spent his tour traveling the world. His experiences in the navy cemented his belief in higher education. He eventually went on to get a Bachelor’s Degree at Georgia State University and finally a Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Georgia.
After obtaining his degrees, he moved to Gainesville to teach biology at Brenau University. He retired from Brenau in 2002 after serving as Dean of the Math and Science dept and eventually finishing his career as Vice President of Administrative Services while John Burd was president. Despite his eventual migration to administration, teaching was always his first love and he continued to do that even after he retired from the university as an administrator until his health no longer allowed. As an instructor at Brenau, he was known to be tough but fair. He genuinely cared that his students passed on their merit and he did what he could to help each and every one of them.
He is survived by sons and daughters in law, Charles Lawrence and Heather (Chisholm) Andrews, Jr., Cumming, GA., Robert Gordon and Michelle (MacKinnon) Andrews, Athens, GA.; grandchildren, Nathan, Derek, Terry, Robbie, and Aaron; sister, Sandra Kidd, Fayetteville, GA.
