Robert Henry Longshore, Jr. age 90, formerly of Athens, Georgia, passed away on October 9th, 2015 after an extended illness. Mr. Longshore, son of the late Robert Henry. Longshore and Lula Mae Longshore, was born and raised in Lanett, Alabama.
He had one brother James A. Longshore, who predeceased him.
After graduating from high school at age 16, Mr. Longshore began college at Auburn University, but interrupted his college education to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Central Pacific during World War II. After returning from service, he earned his B.A. degree in 1947 and.his M.A. degree in English in 1953.
Mr. Longshore married Ruth Neville Longshore in 1949, his loving partner and avid travelling companion for 59 years until her death on 2008. Although Mr. Longshore and his wife had no children of their own, they were very close to their nine nephews and one niece and later with their great nieces and nephews as well.
Mr. Longshore spent the majority of his career as a professor in the English Department at the University of Georgia, beginning in 1957 and continuing for 30 years thereafter. From 1964 until his retirement,he also served as the Assistant to the head of the English Department.
Mr. Longshore and his wife were long time members of the First Christian Church in Athens until her death in 2008 and until his health problems precipitated his move to Morningside Assisted Living in Gainesville in 2011.
Mr. Longshore is survived by six nephews and one niece, as well as many other cousins of himself and his late wife.
