Joseph Nelson Nix, a resident of Commerce, GA and Chicago, IL, passed away on Sept. 8 in Barrington, IL, following a battle with cancer. A Commerce native, he was the son of Joseph Nelson Nix, Sr. and Marguerite Parks Nix.
Nelson Nix - known to many longtime friends as Nickie - graduated from Commerce High School and the University of Georgia, and his ROTC participation led to a commission from the Air Force, in which he attained the rank of captain and served on the wing staff of Col. Chuck Yeager. Following military service, his journalism degree and on-air experience with WJJC Radio provided the background for a career in advertising, marketing, and communications.
A lifetime member of the AirForce Association, the USAF Blackbird Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and DiGamma Kappa Professional Broadcast Society, Mr. Nix is survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews, mostly located in GA.
Following visitation at Ivie Funeral Home on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 1-2:30 pm, a funeral service will be held at 3 pm at First Baptist Church of Commerce, with the Rev. Dr. Carlton Allen officiating, assisted by John Gaissert. Interment will be at Grey Hill Cemetery. Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce in charge of arrangements.
