Alva Tipton Harrell, age 86, passed from this life and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, after a courageous nearly three year battle with cancer.
Al was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, the son of Prior Tipton Harrell and Ella Farmer Harrell. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers Von and Samuel and his sister Dorothy.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War.
Al went to college in Bowling Green, Kentucky, receiving a degree in accounting and soon thereafter became a CPA. For much of his working career, he was a partner with the accounting firm Peat Marwick and Mitchell in Nashville, during which time he spent three years in Japan. Later his career took him to Chattanooga and finally Murfreesboro, TN. After retiring, he and Delores moved to Gainesville.
Al was a devout Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church and the Seekers Sunday School class. He was a very generous person, often choosing to give anonymously. He loved his family dearly, and cherished holiday and birthday family gatherings of fun, fellowship and food. During basketball season, one could usually find Al watching his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Delores Harrell, Gainesville; his brother Joe Harrell and Judy; his sister June Murphy and Paul, all of Morristown, TN; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Diane and John Williams, Gainesville; and twelve nieces and nephews, including Jeff Williams and Leslie, and Carl Williams and Tara, all of Gainesville; and Cathy Tomlinson of Suwanee, GA.
A celebration of Al’s life will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 28, 2015 in the chapel of First Baptist Church on Green Street. Graveside services will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Good News at Noon ministry or First Baptist Church music wing building fund or a charity of your choice.
