Richard George Sullivan, age 54 of Cumming, GA passed away unexpectedly on August 15, 2015.
Richard was born on May 17, 1961 in Grosse Pointe, MI. He graduated from Henderson High School in Atlanta in 1979, and from Mercer University in 1983. He began his business career with AT&T Bell Labs, and had just completed his 25th year as a Technical Service Engineer with Solvay Specialty Polymers in Alpharetta, GA.
Richard touched many young lives as a swim coach with Dynamo Swim Club from 1985 to 1990, and later as a volunteer coach with the Lake Forest Swim Team. His passion for running, cycling, and swimming led to his love of triathlons. Richard became a five-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, with two Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon finishes being his proudest. Having attained Eagle Scout rank as a teen, he was proud to give back to the Boy Scouts, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster with his son Michael's troop. He also loved that his daughters Nicole and Rachel shared his love of swimming and became year-round swimmers.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Kennedy Sullivan; his three children whom he just adored, Nicole, Rachel, and Michael; father, Richard George Sullivan II; aunt Sister Nancy Sullivan; sister Katherine and husband Robert Herren; brother David and wife Elizabeth Sullivan; nieces Alexandra and Katherine Herren, Shannon Sullivan, and nephew Joshua Sullivan. He also leaves behind many brothers and sisters-in-law, and many more nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Sondra Hymes Sullivan.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at McDonald & Son Funeral Home located at 150 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, GA. A prayer service will follow in the chapel and all are invited attend and to share their memories. A private family burial will take place on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Honey Creek Woodlands at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA, laying Richard peacefully to rest in a forest setting.
