Maj. Steven Warren Shonts, 64, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Graveside funeral service with full military honors will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, OK.
Maj. Shonts was born on July 31, 1951, in Oklahoma City, OK and has lived in Gainesville, GA since 2011 after moving from Dahlonega, GA. He was of the Baptist faith. He graduated from Oklahoma State University, Central Michigan University and Clayton State University. He retired in 1994 after 20 years of service from the U. S. Army serving in Desert Storm, Germany, Alaska, Oklahoma, and Georgia. For his services he was awarded Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medals, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. Maj. Shonts retired in 2010 from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Maj. Shonts was preceded in death by his first wife Karen Minton Shonts and his parents, J.D. and Mada Ileen Easton Shonts.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Ivester Shonts of Gainesville, GA, his brother and sister-in-law Jim and Debbie Shonts of Nicoma Park, OK, and his sister, Debbie Toeplitz of Edmond, OK.
