James C. “Smitty” Smith, age 85 of Suwanee, GA passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2015. Funeral service will be held Friday, July 17, 2015 at 9:00 AM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Rev. Danny Newbern will officiate. Interment will follow at 11:00 AM at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA with Military Honors. The family will receive friends Friday, July 17, 2015 from 8:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Smitty was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was born in St. Helena Island, SC on May 15, 1930 to Clever Smith and Victoria Alston. As both parents died at a young age, Smitty was raised by his uncle, George Alston. Smitty spent his childhood and young adulthood in South Carolina and after finishing school, he followed his passion and joined the army and completed his military career in the air force. While serving in the army, Smitty met his wife Clara B. Turner in New York and from this marriage there were three children, James Kevin, Kerri and Kimberly. Smitty was a cook while serving in the army and after being discharged, he continued his career as a cook in the New York Health and Hospital Corporation and eventually retired from North Central Bronx Hospital in New York. After many years without attending church, Smitty decided to join Saint Matthews AME Church and from that point on devoted his life to Christ. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents and uncle. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by his grandchildren, Taylor and Jason and sister Anna Mae Smith.
