Hugh Major Dorsey

Obituary Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2015
Hugh Major Dorsey passed away at his home in Gainesville, GA on July 14th, 2015 – he was 98.
 
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, July 18th, 2015, at Ward’s Funeral Home, 758 Main Street, SW – Gainesville, GA (770-534-5351). Calling hours will be at Ward’s Funeral Home on Friday July 17th, 2015 between 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm. The Rev. Calvin Haney and Mrs. Barbara Head will preside at the Funeral services. Hugh will be laid to rest at Mossy Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cleveland, GA.
 
Hugh Dorsey is survived by his wife Ethelene Thomas Dorsey of 72 years and his son, Bradley Hugh Dorsey Sr. and his wife Cindy of Dawsonville, GA. Hugh has two grandsons, Bradley Hugh Dorsey, Jr. and his wife Brandi of Forsyth County, GA who are the parents of Hugh’s two great grandsons Braxton and Braelen. Hugh’s other grandson Christopher Edward Dorsey and his wife Lindsey live in Gwinnett County, GA.
 
Hugh Dorsey was preceded in death by his brothers Lloyd, Eugene, Paul, Ray, Norman, and Albert; and his sisters Mertie Roper, Arlene Morrison and Hattie May Dorsey.
 
Hugh Dorsey was born on March 19, 1917 in White County, GA to Nora Sosebee Dorsey and Lester Dorsey who were north GA sharecroppers. Hugh lived his entire life in north Georgia. He attended Clermont High School and played basketball for LeTourneau manufacturing plant’s traveling team in Toccoa, GA.
 
Hugh served in the US Army during WWII as a Technical Sargent of the 513th Ordinance Company. Hugh served in four major WWII campaigns; Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Euorpe/Germany from September 28, 1942 until October 14, 1945.
 
Hugh worked as a watchmaker and jeweler in Decatur, GA from 1946 to 1982.
 
Hugh and Ethelene Dorsey resided in Clarkston, GA from 1952 until 1993 where they were members of the Clarkston United Methodist Church. In 1993 Hugh and Ethelene retired to their present home on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA where they are members of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
