Mr. J.C. Turk of Flowery Branch passed away on the afternoon of July 6, 2015 resulting from an extended illness. J.C. was being comforted by his family at the time of his passing, he was 92.
Born in Hall County, Georgia August 31, 1922 he was the second child and the first son of the late Dora Fay Reed Turk and John Herman Turk, Sr. J.C. attended Chestnut Mountain School and later joined the United States Army during World War II. Injured in the Normandy Campaign, J.C. received an honorable discharge along with the European Africian Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with 1 star, Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Purple Heart. He was discharged as Private First Class, Company K, 38th Infantry.
November 10, 1944 J.C. married his childhood friend, Vernie Shewbert. After his military service, J.C. took an Upholstery course and worked as a partner at Gainesville Top and Upholstery for a number of years before going out an starting his own business in Flowery Branch of Turks Upholstery Shop. J.C. loved to hunt and fish and also farming. In March of 2004 he received a certificate of Achievement for Best Farmer in Oakwood. J.C. was a member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include his faithful and loving wife of 71 years, Vernie Shewbert Turk, Flowery Branch; sisters, Blanche Martin, Flowery Branch; Virginia Looper, Buford; Betty Beck, Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bobby Wilburn, Flowery Branch; brother, Henry Howard Turk, Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, John, Jr. and Annette Turk, Gainesville; special cousins, Larry Westmoreland, Flowery Branch; Lamar and Carol Westmoreland, Flowery Branch. A number of neices, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive.
Preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Vernie were blessed with a son, Jackie Cameron Turk of which they were allowed to be his loving parents for 33 years. Jackie went to be with the Lord April 5, 1982. The family finds comfort in knowing that J.C. is now with his loving parents and son.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday July 9, 2015 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Roger Allen and Rev. Wayne Turk will officiate. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Thrasher officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday July 8, 2015 from 6-8 p.m.
The family will accept flowers, or memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity in memory of J.C. Turk.
