Annie Grace Payne Winkler

Obituary Date: Friday, June 19, 2015

Mrs. Annie Grace Payne Winkler, age 96, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, June 19th after a period of declining health.   

Mrs. Winkler was born in Gordon County on August 30, 1918 to Dewey Garron and Lydia Clementine Cochran Payne.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Grady Douglas “Tiny” Winkler, brother and sister in law, Harold Marvin and Mary Ann Staitmeyer Payne; and brother in law Thomas Matthew Weathington.   

Mrs. Winkler started school in a one room school that is now Dewey Baptist Church in Pine Log, Georgia.  Her family moved to Fairmount, Georgia where she continued her education and was saved and Baptized at First Baptist Church of Fairmont on August 16, 1936.  After finishing the seventh grade, her family moved to Cartersville, Georgia, where she met her husband Grady Wilson Winkler, who was serving in the CC Camp.  They married and had two children.  When WWII came, Mrs. Winkler’s husband made arrangements for the family to move to Cleveland and live with his parents, George and Bessie Etris Winkler while he was in the service.   

Survivors include daughter, Martha Elizabeth Winkler Head, Dahlonega; granddaughter Gail E. Head, Dahlonega; grandson, Joseph Grady Winkler, Monroe; sister, Martha Evelyn Weathington, Carrollton; brothers and sisters in law, H.B. and Judith Payne, Acworth, Paul and Evelyn Payne, Morganton, James and Syble Payne, The Villages, Florida, Hugh and Ruby Payne, New Port, North Carolina; and Thomas and Cora May Payne, Ellijay, GA; brother, J.R. Payne, Jasper; four great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. 

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2015 at 2:00pm from the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Cavender’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Stephen Adams will officiate. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, June 20th from 4-9pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Cavender’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O.
