Vera Elaine Overton Johnson, 86, of Cumming, GA passed away on Friday, May 29, 2015. She was born on March 11, 1929 in Nashville, TN. She was the daughter of Sidney Wayne Overton and Cordelia Adine Seals. She was the 2nd of 3 daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, Darby Johnson; and son, David Johnson. She is survived by her son, Wayne Pullen Johnson, Cumming, GA; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Byrd Johnson; granddaughter Addyson Elise Johnson-DeGuzman and husband Austin DeGuzman; sister and brother-in-law, Sydney and Jim Bean, Lawrenceville, GA; nieces and nephews, Shelley DeWeese, Sheryl and Terry Cox, Suzanne and David Dorminey, and Marcia Downey; and numerous cousins.
She attended Sylvan Park Elementary and Cohen High School in Nashville, TN. At age 14, she moved to Georgia for her father’s transfer with the U.S. Weather Bureau. She attended S.W. DeKalb and graduated from Decatur Girls’ High School in 1946. After high school, she worked at Rich’s in Downtown Atlanta until she married Darby Johnson on May 2, 1947. Darby had just returned home with an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Air Corps after two years in the European Theater during WWII.
Elaine spent the rest of her life as a wife, mother of two sons, and taking care of her mother for 8 years. She had many interests. She drew the plans for 3 wheelchair homes for her son, David. She did accounting for their business, Jolico Press, and was a seamstress and artist. Church was always a part of her life. She and Darby taught Sunday School classes. She would occasionally play the piano and organ for services. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Buford, where she attended the Upper Room Sunday School.
Funeral service will be on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Fountain officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Nancy Hart Memorial Park, 1171 Royston Hwy. Hartwell, GA 30643. The Upper Room Sunday School class will serve as Honorary Escort. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Buford Benevolent Fund in memory of Elaine Johnson.
