Marie Janett Maxwell Carter

Mrs. Marie Janett Maxwell Carter, age 100, of Toccoa, passed away May 14, 2015 at Willow Gardens in Toccoa.

Born March 19, 1915, in Stephens County, she was a daughter of the late James Payton Maxwell, Sr. and Eunice Davis Maxwell and was the widow of John Terrell (J.T.) Carter.  She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Stephens County, GA.

For many years, the Carters operated Carter’s Superette on Pond Street, and she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for more than 80 years.

Family members include sons, Dr. Charles Q. Carter and his wife, Margaret of Jonesboro, Ga., and Royce J. Carter and his wife Evalyn of Greenville, SC.; daughter, Geraldine Carter Jordan and her husband, Bobby of Toccoa; brothers, B.Q. Maxwell of Dallas, Ga., and John T. Maxwell and his wife, Sylvia of Tampa, Fl.; sister, Lula Faith Maxwell of Kennesaw, Ga.; half-brother, Pate Maxwell of Toccoa; half-sisters, Ann Stowe and Sharon Stewart of Toccoa and Linda Bennett of Gainesville, Ga.; grandsons, Terry Carter of Stockbridge, Ga., Greg Carter and his wife, Cortney, Ken Carter and his wife, Michelle, of Greenville, SC; granddaughters, Cheryl Carter King and her husband Paul of Johns Creek, Ga., Jan Jordan of Bend, Or.; great-grandsons, Kyle Carter, Gray Carter, and Cole Carter; great-granddaughters, Adison Carter, Kelli Anne Carter, and Caylin Carter; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Herston R. Maxwell, William Colon Maxwell, Leery Lee Maxwell, J.P. Maxwell, and Starling Maxwell; half-brother, Michael Maxwell; sisters, Stella Mae Kellar, LaTrella Shirley, Ruby Nell Jenkins; and a half-sister, Karen Smith.

Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Saturday, May 16, 2015 from the Chapel with Dr. Charles Q. Cater and the Rev. Andy Childs officiating. 

Grandchildren and Great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers, Cheryl King, Terry Carter, Jan Jordan, Greg Carter, Ken Carter, Kyle Carter, and Gray Carter.

Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 8pm Friday May 15, 2015.
