Daisy Grace Gibson Carter

Obituary Date: Thursday, April 30, 2015

Daisy Grace Gibson Carter passed away on April 30, 2015.  She was born on March 16, 1925, in Union City, Georgia, to the late Walter Murrah and Daisy Adelia Gibson.  She attended West Fulton High School in Atlanta, Georgia, then began working for Southern Bell.  She married Benjamin Hill Carter, Sr. in November 1954, and they moved to Gainesville, where she and Ben had two children.  She worked as a church secretary for First Baptist Church for two years, then worked at Southern Bell in Gainesville until July 1957.  She then became a full-time mother and a well-known community volunteer.  Mrs. Carter volunteered at the Hall County Hospital (now Northeast Georgia Medical Center) for 33 years, and spent 18 years volunteering with the American Red Cross.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class, participated in the choir for many years, and taught 5th and 7th grade Sunday School classes.  She was a member of the PTAs for the Gainesville schools, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and served many years with Meals on Wheels.  She enjoyed the local Garden Club, as well as playing in a bridge club and playing golf.

Mrs. Carter and her husband were known as staunch supporters of both Gainesville High School and the University of Georgia, holding season tickets for football and basketball games.  They were also long-time supporters of the Georgia women’s gymnastics team. They were charter members of the Chattahoochee Country Club and members of the Gainesville Elks Club.  

Mrs. Carter is remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother, a proud grandmother, and a loving and loyal mother-in-law, sister, aunt, volunteer, and friend.  She dedicated her life to endeavors that supported and helped others.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Trish Carter, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Randy McKellar, Argyle, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Carter and his wife Abigail, and Lauren Burnett and her husband Bryan, all of Gainesville, Stephanie Staton and her husband Conrad, Trinidad, Texas, and Alex, Nick, and Zach McKellar, all of Argyle, Texas.  She is also survived by her brother, Walter Edward Gibson, Fayetteville, Georgia, sister, Thelma Irene “Gibbie” Buch, Hackettstown, New Jersey, brother-in-law Roy Causey, Fayetteville, Georgia, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their extended families.

Mrs. Carter is preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Hill Carter, Sr., and three sisters – Alice Eugenia Wallace, Ruth Aline Lovelace, and Lillie Mae Causey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2015, at Little-Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Hwy, Gainesville.  Rev. Don Ormsbee and Rev. Bruce Fields will officiate.  Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Little-Davenport Funeral Home.
