John (Jack) Johnston, age 82 of Sautee Nacoochee, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at his residence.
Jack Johnston was born in Belfast, Ireland, on April 11, 1933. The oldest of seven children, he was educated in New York and graduated from Columbia University. He honorably served in the infantry in the Korean War. In his early career, he worked in book publishing. He was a lifelong writer of screenplays and novels and wrote a song featured in the album, “The Unknown Kurt Weil.” He and his wife Barbara and his children Jennifer and John moved to Sautee in 1971. He then became a management consultant to power plants, mines, and automobile companies for thirty years. His maintenance systems were well known in the industry, and he was admired in his field. He worked in Chile, Jamaica, Australia, Puerto Rico, and throughout North America. He was a consultant to the mining community in Alabama for seven years. After retiring, he devoted himself to his writing and published a book on Kindle entitled “Fathers and Son.” He also enjoyed following the Braves and Bulldogs.
He is survived by Barbara Johnston, his wife of 53 years; his children, Jennifer Johnston Stier and John Johnston; son-in-law, Jeff Stier; granddaughters, Emily Johnston and Maeve Stier; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie Johnston and Linda Johnston; sister, Liz Caro; nephew, Nick Caro; niece, Val Bureau. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Astrid Fried, previous owner of the Old Sautee Store, and brother-in-law, Mervin Fried.
Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Monday, May 18, 2015 at Grace Calvary Episcopal Church in Clarkesville. The Rev. Bob Prim and Father Same Buice will officiate.
