William Lamar Mangum

Obituary Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Mr. William Lamar Mangum “Bill”, 90, of Gainesville GA, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. 

His funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Central Baptist Church in Gainesville, GA, with Pastor Earl Pirkle officiating.  There will be a graveside service at Alta Vista Cemetery following the service   The family will have visitation at Little and Davenport Funeral Home Friday, April 3, from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Mangum was a lifelong resident of Hall County.  He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII before returning to Gainesville.  He retired from the General Motors plant in Doraville and always proudly drove GM cars.  He also worked for many years as a barber both at his father’s shop, Mangum’s Barber Shop, as well as other shops around Gainesville. Once Mr. Mangum retired, he became more active in the Masons and Shriners.  He served as Master of the Clermont Lodge 1452 four times.  He was recently honored to have the building that the Lodge meets in named the William Lamar Mangum Building.  He also served as President of the local Lanier Shrine Club.  He made numerous trips transporting children to and from the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital so that the children could receive treatment.

Mr. Mangum also loved to cook and bake.  He is known fondly by many as “The Muffin Man” for the many muffins he gave friends and family.  His pecan pie is just as famous as his muffins.  Mr. Mangum showed his love through his cooking.

Mr. Mangum is preceded in death by his wife Sarah Henson Mangum, and his parents Gus Winborn Mangum and Henrietta Hudgins.  Survivors include his daughter Elizabeth Gail Mangum, nieces Peggy Moody of Athens, Joan Prescott of New York, Ann Jones of Wisconsin, Carolyn Heidmous and Linda Dabio of Michigan and nephew Larry Dover of Michigan.  He is also survived by sisters in law Jean Pless and Sandra Gaither of Gainesville, brother in-law James Henson of Gainesville, and numerous nieces and nephews of his wife. 

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made his in memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  The website is www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.
