Betty Hitt Swords Garrison

Mrs. Betty Hitt Swords Garrison, age 91 of Prather Bridge Road, Toccoa, Georgia passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Morningside Assisted Living in Gainesville, Georgia.

A daughter of the late Rufus George and Edith Sanders Hitt, she was born February 28, 1924 in Toccoa, Georgia. Betty received her education in the schools of Toccoa, Eastanollee and Toccoa Falls College. During World War II, she worked for the War Price and Ration Board as Price Clerk for Stephens County. After the war, she was employed by the R.G. Letourneau Company as Secretary to the Industrial Chaplin. She was later offered a position as a Regional Administrator for a nationwide public relations firm specializing in capital fundraising campaigns for colleges and hospitals. She retired as an Administrative Assistant at the General Motors Regional Office in 1978.

Betty was active in religious and community services her entire life. She was a member of the Toccoa First United Methodist Church where she served as organist, choir member and soloist, secretary of the charge conference, Administrative Board and as a Trustee of the church.

Some of her community services included: Board member and Secretary of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Toccoa Federated Music Club, Pilot Club of Toccoa, President of Peachtree Pilot Club, Rich's Business Women's Advisory Board, Chairperson of the Toccoa 2000 Task Force on Culture and Recreation, Chairperson of the Historic Preservation of the Stephens County Courthouse and Trustee of the Stephens County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Swords and her second husband, Broward Garrison, by a brother, George W. Hitt and by a sister, Ongie Lee.

Survivors include a special cousin, Dorothy Britt; two nieces and two nephews, Rev. Bryan Lee (Marlene), Elaine Hall, Mary Lee and Rev. Richard Lee (Judy). She will always be remembered and loved by her dear friend, Kim H. Pruitt.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 25, 2 O'clock PM in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. John Brown officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Larry Poole, John Dickerson, Steve Tilley and Dan Merck.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1 PM until the service time.

Flowers are to be omitted. Memorials may be made to the Stephens County Historical Society, 160 N. Alexander Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577 or Toccoa First United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, 333 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577 in memory of Mrs. Betty Hitt Swords Garrison.

Interment will be in the Toccoa City Cemetery with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Betty Hitt Swords Garrison.
