Dora Hulsey Cain

Obituary Date: Thursday, February 19, 2015

Dora Hulsey Cain, 85, of Gainesville passed away on Thursday, February 19th, 2015.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy R. and Frances Cain, and Joe and Judy Cain; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Dana and Jeremy Farr, Candice and Michael Blair, and D'Anna and Clay Cain; great-grandchildren Amelia and T.J. Farr; siblings and in-laws, Fred and Gussie Hulsey, Edith and Foster Rogers, and Ruth and Alvin Hicks; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Cain; her parents, Albert and Flossie Hulsey; and her siblings, Ray Dean Hulsey, Raymond Hulsey, Ider Webb, Don Hulsey, and Valeria Stalnaker.

Dora grew up in White County, Georgia. Her father passed away at an early age, and during the Great Depression, her mother had Tuberculosis and was quarantined. During such a difficult time, Dora developed a resiliency and spirit that endured throughout her life. She held fast to her siblings and learned to survive and thrive.

After World War II, she met and married her beloved husband of 59 years, T.J. Cain. They established their home in Gainesville with their two sons. They were members of New Bridge Baptist Church, and she was a member of the Ladies Circle, where she loved to participate in activities and visit with her friends.

Dora was an excellent seamstress, and often made clothing and quilts for her family. She worked as a seamstress for Saul's and Shirley's, and she also did alterations for several members of the community. She made handmade crafts that she sold at Unicoi to give visitors a taste of the South, and people all throughout the United States own pieces of her handiwork.

Dora's life was devoted to her sons, her granddaughters, and her great-grandchildren. She loved getting her family together and relished having family home for holiday meals and celebrations. Her life was full of familial sacrifice, a fierceness of spirit, and devotion to those she loved. Her family will miss her dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at New Bridge Baptist Church. Rev. Milton Harris will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
