Herman Clarence (Chic) Harden

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2015, in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home for Herman Clarence "Chic" Harden, 83, of Chicopee, who died January 29 after a brief illness. The visitation was Sunday, February 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Little & Davenport Funeral Home. He will be interred in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Born in Westminster, S.C., to Venuard Harden and Marie Willis Harden, he moved with his family to Chicopee at the age of five. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Great Britain from 1951 to 1955 and subsequently earned a degree in business administration from Piedmont College. In one of his early jobs, he transferred the Hall County records from paper to microfilm in their first step toward digital record keeping. After spending some time as a public school teacher, he went to work for Chicopee Mill in the quality assurance area until he retired in 1991.

Herman is remembered for his enduring loyalty to the legacy of Robert Wood Johnson, robust work ethic, devotion to family and friends, intense love of learning, remarkable musical and mechanical abilities, and unending generosity.

He was preceded in death by sisters Frances Allison and Edith Elder, of Chicopee; sister, Vera Elder, of Arlington, Texas; and one brother, Eugene Harrison Harden, of Gainesville.

He is survived by one sister, Hazel Reat, of Mount Vernon, Texas, and numerous cousins, nieces, grandnieces, nephews, and grandnephews.
