Bobby Cooper of Cleveland passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015. Born March 17, 1929 in Gainesville, GA, he was the son of H. Guy Cooper, former police chief of Gainesville, and Verdell Aiken Cooper. He attended Gainesville City Schools and Gainesville High School where he participated in football and track. He attended Erskine College in South Carolina. He worked for Southern Bell/ Bell South for 42 years. After retirement, he worked at Epps Field Airport in Athens, GA for Sonny Smith Air Service. He had a great love for flying and aircraft.
He was a referee with Blue Ridge Officials Association for 25 years, former Commissioner of Pony League Baseball and coached Legion Baseball. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and also served as Commander of American Legion Post No. 7. He was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, GA.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nina Palmer.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 60 years, daughters, Darlene Wilson Cooper; Jackye L. Cooper, Lea A. Cooper and Viveca N. Cooper; grandson Jason Whitmire (Michelle); and 2 great grandsons; sisters, Peggy (Dillard) Bayrd and Ann (Wendell) Denard; many special nieces and nephews and very special friend and co-woker, Kerry Cosgrove.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 1 until 3 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland. Memorial services will be held at 3 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville, GA at 10 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
The family as asked that memorial donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland 147 North Main Street, Cleveland, GA 30528.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sean Sumner and Robin, Dr. Tucci, staff at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (especially Jennifer and Elizabeth), staff at Gateway Health and Rehab and Hospice of Northeast Georgia for their professional and caring treatment of our loved one during his illness.
