Mr. John B. (J.B.) Shope, age 90, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel with interment to follow in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County. Alan Shope will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the funeral home.
J.B. was born March 3, 1924 in Lumpkin County, the son of the late John B. Shope, Sr. and Roxie (Goudelock) Shope. He was a lifelong resident of Hall County. He proudly served his country not once but twice in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Paul E. Bolding Post #7, the V.F.W. and the Murrayville Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He was an Entrepreneur of several local successful community businesses. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and always enjoyed gatherings with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Ruth (Thompson) Shope; son, David Shope, sisters, Faye Whitmire and Annie Wheeler.
J.B. is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jo (Sheriff) Shope of Gainesville; step-son and wife, Allen and Michelle Hyde of Flowery Branch; sisters, Imagene Barnes of Clermont, Lillian Gilreath of Gainesville, Estelle Shope of Tucson, AZ, Margaret Murphy of Gainesville, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jim Whelchel of Blairsville; brother and sister-in-law, William (Dick) and Imogene Shope of Gainesville; granddaughter and husband, Amanda and Adam Riley of Flowery Branch; daughter-in-law, Vonda Shope and special niece, Tori Hudgins Mabry and a host of other nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Ronnie Green Heart Center 743 Spring Street Gainesville, GA 30501.
