Dr. Eddie Lee Jackson, age 90 of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2014.
Celebration of life service is scheduled for 11:00 am Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville. Private interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Dr. Jackson was born October 24, 1924 in Calhoun, Georgia, one of 6 children, the son of the late Carl S. Jackson and Aileen (Dyer) Jackson. After graduating from Calhoun High School, Eddie enrolled in North Georgia College, where he met Hazel Meredith Richardson, his future wife. He left college to join the Army during World War II. His future wife worked at the Bell Bomber Plant during that time. When Eddie returned from the Service, he and Hazel were married on October 26, 1946.
Dr. Jackson attended Emory University before being accepted into Emory University Dental School in 1948. Graduating in 1952, he established his dental health practice in Gainesville, Georgia. He enjoyed his years devoted to his patients. Retirement came at the end of 1990.
During his dental health career, Dr. Jackson was a Fellow in the International College of Dentistry. He served as president of the Hall County Dental Society and the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice. He was a lifetime member and Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association. He was a life member of the American Dental Association and the Hinman Dental Society. He trained several dental hygienists during his dental career.
Civic and professional organizations were among his interests. A longtime member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church, he served as a charter member of the Open Door Sunday School Class. He served as its President for many years. He enjoyed the "Meals on Wheels" program because of his love for people and his love to serve. His love for history and legacy was evident in his devotion to the Sons of the American Revolution organization. He served as president of the Lanier Chapter of the S.A.R. He worked with the Boy Scouts who were receiving S.A.R. Scholarships.
Eddie will mostly be remembered for his friendliness, joking nature, and love of people. He was a blessing to all who knew him.
Dr. Jackson is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Hazel (Richardson) Jackson of Oakwood; children, Nancy (Jackson) Davis, Mimi (Jackson) and husband, David A. Fox, Kandy (Jackson) and husband, Rev. Dr. Dee Shelnutt, David Eddie and wife Connie B. Jackson; grandchildren, David E. Jackson, Jr. (Brandy), Martin J. Davis (Missy), Jonathan E. Davis (Mary), Peter J. Davis (Sarah), D. Allen Fox, Stacy E. Fox, Jackson W. Fox, Meredith S. Thrasher (The Rev. Jordan), Emory B. Shelnutt (Ashley), Wesley J., Shelnutt (Melissa); great-grandchildren, Ruby, Hannah, Georgia, Elizabeth, Anna and Parker and sister, Pat Underwood.
