Joseph Harding Cain, 93, of Flowery Branch passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at 1:30 pm in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with internment to follow in the Memorial Park cemetery. Mr. Cain was born on January 29, 1921 in Dahlonega, Ga to the late John C. Cain and Martha Cain. He was retired from The John Deere Co. where he served as a district manager and was a member of Chicopee Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Myrtice Cain.
Husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Joseph Cain lived through the Great Depression, served as a map maker with the U.S. Army during World War II, and was most recently in the process of single-handedly rebuilding the barn his father-in-law originally constructed more than 70 years ago. Papa, as Joe was known by his grandchildren and great grandchildren invented, tinkered, and fixed just about anything with a motor. When asked what he believed the secret to living a long life with such vitality, he said: "Don't worry about yesterday or tomorrow, just think about today." When Mama, as Myrtice was known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, could no longer read, Papa sat next to her and read the Bible out loud. Now they are together again with Jesus in Heaven. No doubt he is mowing the lawn in front of their home as she sips on a glass of sweet tea watching him admiringly from the porch.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Cain Hosea of Flowery Branch, grandson and wife, Andy and Kim Hosea of Westtown, New York, daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Bill Leonard of Atlanta, grandson and wife, Billy and Yen ling Leonard of Highlands, NC, granddaughter and husband, Martha Cary and Justin Lowery of Atlanta, great-grandchildren, Annabelle Leonard, Savannah Leonard, Tallulah Leonard, Reese Lowery, and Jacob Lowery, sister, Zona Bell Wilbanks of Flowery Branch, and sister, Idell Pace of Dawsonville.
