Mrs. Elizabeth Jarrett Turnbull Hayes, age 100 of 346 Old Riverdale Road, Toccoa passed away Friday December 19, 2014 at her residence.
The daughter of the late Augustus Bacon Turnbull Sr. and Elizabeth Jarrett Turnbull, she was born September 2, 1914 in Stephens County, Georgia where she lived all her life. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Hayes and two children Sarah Nan "Cookie" Bell and Augustus "Bucky" Hayes, a granddaughter Suzanne Bell and a son-in-law Gene Savage.
She was a graduate of Toccoa High School in 1930,. Georgia State College for Women in 1933, having received her teaching degree. She began teaching in 1933 and taught in many county schools in Georgia and South Carolina until retiring in 1974. She was a lifetime member of Providence United Methodist Church, where she was the secretary and treasurer.
Mrs. Hayes was very active in community activates and had served as a charter member of Stephens County Historical Society and a charter member of Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Stephens County Hospital Auxiliary where she was recently honored at the dedication of the Love Light Tree at the hospital, a member of the American Cancer Society, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Retired Teachers Association and Pastor Parish Committee of 1st United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hayes was the Stephens County Star Teacher in 1964, State of Georgia Winner Award in 1994, Senior Woman of the Year in 2000, Grand Marshall of the Toccoa Christmas Parade, and elected to the Toccoa/Stephens County Hall of Fame in 2009. A building was erected, Elizabeth T. Hayes Pavilion, at the Tugaloo Bend by the Tugaloo Corridor Association in her honor.
She is survived by three daughters and son-in-law Alyce Howard, Katie and Tim Hale and Debbie Savage all of Toccoa, two sons and daughters-in-law Hank and Carolyn Hayes of Toccoa and Danny and Betty Hayes of Snellville, Georgia and 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Sunday December 21, 2014 at 3 P.M. at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverend Bryan Stokes and the Reverend Brent Ware officiating. Interment will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home and will receive friends from 2 P.M. - 4 P.M. and 6 P.M. - 8 P.M on Saturday and 2 until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.
The following family members will serve as pallbearers Stephen Savage, Jason Davis, Jeff Howard, Henry B. Hayes, David Bell and Frankie Deitz.
Flowers are optional and memorials can be made in her memory to Providence Methodist Church or the Stephens County Historical Society.
