Harry D. Scroggs

Obituary Date: Monday, November 24, 2014
Mr. Harry D. Scroggs, age 96, of Oakwood passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 at The Oaks at Limestone.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 29, 2014 in the Chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Oakwood City Cemetery. Rev. Steve Felon will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, 2014 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.

Mr. Scroggs was born March 28, 1918 to the late William Frank and Annie Martha Puckett Scroggs in Oakwood. He was raised on the land that is now North Georgia College, formerly Gainesville College. Harry graduated from Oakwood High School and with a scholarship attended the University of Georgia. He served in the European Theater with the 94th Infantry Division of Patton's Third Army during World War II. Upon returning, he married his sweetheart, Bea Gilstrap on January 13, 1946. The Lord blessed them with three beautiful sons: Charles, James, and Glen. He retired from USDA Poultry Inspection in 1979.

Harry was very involved in the church he loved, First Baptist Church Of Oakwood. He worked in many positions of service during his life-long membership at First Baptist Oakwood. He was an active deacon for over 50 years and Deacon Emeritus in his later years. His passion for the Lord, His Word, and prayer were evident to all who knew him.

Harry was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Bea G. Scroggs; sons, Glen F. (18 months) & Charles W. (44 years); brothers, Paul Scroggs and Horace Scroggs; sisters, Jessie Lou Reed, Alice Lee Rice & Lois Kinsey.

Mr. Scroggs is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, James L. & Barbara T. Scroggs of Gainesville; daughter-in-law & husband, Brenda Scroggs & Jimmy Adams of Gainesville; grandchildren, Drs. Drew Robert & Lisa Valeria Scroggs Ekman, Kimberly Joy Scroggs, Jeffery Taylor & Amber Camilla Scroggs, Christopher Michael Scroggs and Jason Daniel Scroggs; great-grandchildren, Molly Elizabeth Ekman, Elisabeth Arwen Scroggs, Fischer Charles Ekman, Madison Lilly Scroggs, and Samuel Taylor Scroggs; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Oakwood, P.O. Box 185, Oakwood, Georgia 30566.
