William "Howard" Pickens
Obituary Date: Sunday, November 23, 2014
Funeral services for William "Howard" Pickens, 92, of Clarkesville will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Clarkesville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Phil Demore, Rev. Jan Devereaux, and Rev. Brian Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Batesville, Ga.
Mr. Pickens died Nov. 23, 2014, at his home with his family by his side.
Born March 6, 1922, in Redan, Ga., he was the son of the late Willie A. Pickens and Gussie Mae Pickens. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son Phillip H. Pickens, by brothers Ralph L. Pickens and James Pickens and an infant sister.
Mr. Pickens was a member of Clarkesville First United Methodist Church and served on their Missions Team. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. He owned the East Atlanta Barber Shop and was a Master Barber credited with creation of the Flat Top Crewcut. He also owned the OK Bonding Co. in Dekalb Co., was a partner in Pickens & Garrett Development Co., and Destin Developers. Mr. Pickens was a member of The Yaarab Temple. He was an avid Golfer, Pilot, and loved fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 69 ½ years, Gladys Sheppard Pickens and children Danny R. Pickens, SR, Gail P. Hayden, son and daughter in law Doug and Laura Pickens, daughter in law Kathleen K. Pickens, thirteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, brother Floyd Pickens and sister Doris Hinson.
Visitation at the funeral home from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Tuesday, Nov. 25th.
