Monte Vincent Davis

Obituary Date: Friday, November 7, 2014
Monte Vincent Davis, a resident of Bent Tree GA, died peacefully at home on November 7, 2014. He was born April 29, 1923, in Cove, Oregon, to Reuben Davis and Pomona Stackland Davis. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Adler Davis of Bent Tree GA, his daughter Teri Davis DiMaggio of Tucson AZ, two grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his daughter Sheri Davis Clarke.

Dr. Davis earned a B.A. in Physics and Math from Linfield College, McMinnville, OR, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Physics from Oregon State University. Prior to attending college, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe from 1943 to 1946.

He was Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Engineering and Health Physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he served as Director of the Neely Nuclear Research Center and Professor from 1973 to 1987. From 1961 to 1973 he was Director of the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory and Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Arizona, Tucson. From 1957 to 1961 he was Group Leader of the Advanced Systems Group of the SNAP Program and Project Engineer for SNAP-4 at Atomics International Division, Rockwell International. He also served as consultant to several organizations, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Space Power Inc., Martin-Marietta, McDonnell-Douglas, and Argonne National Laboratory.

Dr. Davis was a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and a member of the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, the International Solar Energy Society, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine. He was very proud of the students whose Master's and Ph.D. research he supervised, and always said he learned more from them than they learned from him. Several of them became lifelong friends.

A strong supporter and happy resident of Bent Tree, he served on the community's Board of Directors for two terms, among other volunteer activities. Those wishing to do so can make a contribution in his memory to the Bent Tree Foundation, 744 Noah Drive, #113-184, Jasper GA 30143.
