Ret. Lt. Colonel William Holden Smith

Ret. Lt. Colonel William Holden Smith, age 85, of Macon, GA, formerly of Buford, GA, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2014 at home after an extended illness. Bill was born September 17, 1929 in Alpharetta, GA to the late Mr. Thomas Lewis Smith and the late Ruth Kilgore Smith. He graduated from Buford High School and North Georgia Military College. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a decorated combat officer while serving in the Korean War. He retired as owner of Smith Crown and Bridge Dental Lab of Lawrenceville, GA in 1990, retiring at the same time from the U. S. Army at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Jane Greer Smith; sons, William H. Smith, Jr. (Carol) of Lawrenceville, GA, and Dr. James M. Smith (Felicia) of Newnan, GA; daughter, Kathryn Smith Hawkins (Dr. Chuck) of Macon, GA; grandchildren, Jason Smith (Kim) of Dacula, GA, Jennifer Smith Morris (Jeremy) of Dunwoody, GA, Dr. Lindsay Hawkins Lefler (Dr. Will) of Loveland, CO, Greer Hawkins Craig (Bryan) of Atlanta, GA, Jean Hawkins Peake (Joby) of Atlanta, GA, Patrick Smith (Greer) of New Orleans, LA, and Jake and Sophie Smith of Newnan, GA; six great grandchildren, Evelyn and Alice Smith, Carter and Jane Morris, Henry Holden Smith, and Henry Hawkins Peake. Also surviving is Emma, his loyal and beloved dog. The family would like to express their appreciation for the care given to Bill by loyal family friend Kathy Hughley, caregiver Vicky Thomas and Candace with Pine Pointe Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Johnson officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, 5979 New Bethany Road, Buford, GA 30518. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church of Buford, P. O. Box 329, Buford, GA 30515 or Paws & Adopt, Inc., 141 Princeton Drive, Macon, GA 31220 in memory of Bill Smith.
