Walter G. Davis

Walter G. Davis of Cornelia passed on October 1, 2014 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his father, John M. Davis, his mother, Josey Inez Davis, and his brother John C. Davis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lillian "Lin" Davis, his three sons, Casey, Ken, and Jason, and a granddaughter, Harley Beth Davis, and several nieces and nephews.



Walt was a Navy veteran of WWII. He attended West Georgia College, Middle Tennessee State College and Erskine College, earning a MA degree in Education. He taught and coached football and basketball at South Habersham High School in Cornelia from 1957 to 1962. In 1963 he took the position of Athletic Director and coach at the Georgia Industrial Institute for juvenile offenders in Alto, where he retired in 1983. After retirement, Walt went on to work and travel for Cantrell Machines of Gainesville.



Coach Davis was a long-time fixture in the Habersham County recreation sports leagues throughout the 1960's, 70's and 80's.



Coach Davis was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Cornelia Lions Club.



Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia with Rev. Toni Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens

.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-8 pm on Friday, October 3, 2014.
