William L. Voorhies, III

William L. Voorhies, III, of Atlanta, GA, passed away at his home at the age of 67. Born in Alexandria, LA and raised in Atlanta, GA., Bill graduated from Briarcliff High School before he earned his marketing degree at the University of Georgia. After college, Bill joined the U.S. Army and served two years active duty, then remained in the U.S. Army Reserve for 35 years. Bill was Chief of Individual Training as a civilian and as a reservist at the 81st Army Reserve Command, with an area of responsibility over the states of Georgia and Florida. He was responsible for over fifteen hundred soldiers to have the proper training to perform their mission in over one hundred units. During the reorganization of the Army Reserve, Bill went to the United States Reserve Command, where his responsibility remained the same as in Individual Training, but with his territory expanded nationally to include thousands more Army Reserve soldiers. One of the most important projects Bill was responsible for was called the 'School of the Air'. He was instrumental getting the program off the ground and it was very successful.
Bill also proudly served in the Honor Guard for many years and loved gardening.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William L. Voorhies Jr. and Alyne Porteous Voorhies, and by his brother, Thomas Porteous Voorhies. Survivors include his long time partner Gwen Raburn-Brock, and two children, William L. Voorhies, IV. of Stone Mountain, GA and Aimee Leigh Foley of Roswell, GA; five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and one sister, Janet Voorhies of Everett, WA. Bill also had a special relationship with Gwen's grandchildren, Tom and Melissa Priddy and Beth Priddy-Shotwell and other numerous grandchildren.
There will be a 4:00 p.m. Memorial Service on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Dahlonega Funeral Home in Dahlonega, GA. Visitation will be Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 2pm to 6pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at a private family service on Monday, September 29, 2014 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL.
