Joan Manley Altmayer, 97, formerly of Miami, Blowing Rock, NC and currently resided in Gainesville, Georgia, passed away quietly in her sleep on September 8, 2014.
Joan was born in Miami in 1917 and her family were among its first pioneers. She attended Miami Beach High as well as Miami High. After marrying another long time resident of Miami, Bud Altmayer, in 1938, Bud and Joan settled down and began raising their family. After many years in Miami, Joan and Bud moved to Blowing Rock, North Carolina, where they lived until Bud's death in 2013. Jo and Bud were married for 75+ years. Upon Bud's death, Joan moved to Gainesville, Georgia to be closer to her extended family.
Survived by Joan are her three children, Sally Altmayer Enright of Blowing Rock, NC, Stephen Altmayer of Yakima, Washington and Ann Altmayer Murphey of Flowery Branch, Georgia and Stephen and Ann's spouses, Andrea Altmayer and Kent Murphey. Joan also had six grandchildren: Sarah Brooker, Will Enright, Kelly Stewart, James Murphey, Leah Berclaz and Mag Altmayer. Joan was blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Jonathan and Hannah Stewart, Noe and Mathilde Berclaz, Harper and Reid Murphey and Aaron Brooker.
During her many years in Miami and Blowing Rock, Joan volunteered tirelessly at Jackson Memorial Hospital, South Miami Hospital and Blowing Rock Library. Her many interests included knitting, needlepoint, and reading.
Joan's warmth and graciousness will be remembered and embraced by everyone whose lives she touched. She was gracious and thoughtful to the very end.
At Joan's request, there will be no service. Donations in Joan's name may be made to the "Good News Clinic", 810 Pine St, Gainesville, GA 30501, a free clinic where Bud and Jo both once volunteered.
