William Major (Pop) Payne

Mr. William Major (Pop) Payne, age 91 of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Payne was born on September 26, 1922 in Union County to the late Tom and Eliza Fortenberry Payne. He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2 in Suches. He also served in the CC Camp. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mildred Pauline Payne; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bobby Boggus; daughter, Janice Sue Payne; brothers, Dicie Grizzle, JC Payne, Charles Payne, Bud Payne, Harold Payne, Loy Payne; sisters, Nellie Carter, Maggie Carter, Amy Payne, Annie Payne; son-in-law, Hoyt Thompson.

Survivors include daughters, Lillie Mae (Albert) Copp, Cleveland, Mary Lou Thompson, Fairburn, GA, Ann (Jimmy) Boggs, Cleveland, Amy (Dean) Smith, Cleveland, Terrie (Jack) Enloe, Dahlonega, GA; sons, James Harold Payne, Millen, GA, Tommy (Brenda ) Payne, Cleveland, Ray (Jeannine) Payne, Cleveland, David (Janelle) Payne, Fairburn, GA, Bill Payne, Cleveland, Don (Sherry) Payne, Cleveland; adopted son, Dennis (Becky) Taylor, Cleveland; 27 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 P.M. Thursday at the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Jack Enloe and Rev. Dennis Taylor will officiate. Interment will follow at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
