Andrew Jackson Turpin, Jr.

Mr. Andrew Jackson Turpin, Jr. of Cleveland, Georgia, called "Jack" by those who knew and loved him, died on August 16, 2014. He was born in Washington, Georgia on February 18, 1927. Jack served in the Army in the European Theatre during WWII. In private life he spent most of his career as an Atlanta Gaslight Company pipeline contractor with Concrete Construction Company.

Jack's greatest joy was serving his Lord as an ordained deacon, Sunday School teacher and usher. He served on various committees and faithfully participated in the outreach/visitation programs at First Baptist Chamblee and First Baptist Church of Cleveland. His love for people led him to volunteer at the White County Food Pantry where he served for years until his health declined.

Jack was a devoted husband to his wife Barbara "Jean" Matlock Turpin for almost 69 years and a loving father to his two sons Tony Turpin (wife Brenda) of Tucker, Georgia and Steve Turpin of Georgetown, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; two sisters Doris Jenkins of Doraville, Georgia and Janet Troutman (husband Jay) of Stockbridge, Georgia; one brother Ray Turpin (wife Nola) of Alpharetta, Georgia and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Andrew Jackson Turpin, Sr. and Jessie Ramey Turpin, his brother James Turpin and his sister Bernice Dotson. He was his wife Jean's "right hand man" a very gifted person who could do about anything he set his mind to do. He singlehandedly built the house in Dunwoody, Georgia that we lived in until he retired and the house in Cleveland, Georgia where we have lived since 1989.

Jack was an avid reader and he loved to write. He was especially proud of the antique car steering wheel restoration handbook that he wrote in 1981, and which is currently in it's eleventh edition. He collected all types of antiques, including twelve antique and classic vehicles which he restored to "like new" condition. What a privilege it is to say "I am Jean" Jack Turpin's wife.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, August 17th at 2:30 PM at Gateway Memory Park, 1848 Boulevard Street. Dr. Mike Davis officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church of Cleveland, PO Box 250, Cleveland, GA 30528.
