Evans Funeral Home announces the death of Mr. Henley Broughton Wilkes, age 73, of Jefferson, Georgia who entered into rest Tuesday, August 12, 2014.
Mr. Wilkes was born in Jefferson, Georgia the son of the late Worth and Mattie Jackson Wilkes, was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church, a retired Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam Conflict, and was retired from the U.S. Post Office after 37 years of service. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilkes is preceded by three sisters, Laconia Wilkes, Thelma Nabors, and Frances Glenn and a brother J.T. Wilkes.
Survivors include wife, Carole Hart Venable Wilkes of Jefferson, step daughter, Sandy Cooper and her husband Dwight of Jefferson, step son, John Wayne Venable of Jefferson. Daughter, Shannon Wheeler and her husband Bryan of Jefferson, Son, Jamey Wilkes and his wife Debra of Toccoa, Sisters, Carolyn Evans and Connie Hemphill of Jefferson and brother Luther Wilkes of Jefferson. Grandchildren, Steven Cooper, Cindy Cooper, Claire Wheeler and Parker Wilkes.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 15, 2014 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike McLemore and Reverend Dugar Strickland officiating with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. The following gentlemen will be honored as pallbearers, Brian Evans, Gary Glenn, Darren Glenn, Andy Wilkes, Stan Evans and Grant Evans. The Albert Gordon Post of the American Legion will be honored as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends 6-8 Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Funeral Home and also on Friday prior to the funeral service. Flowers are optional with memorials made to the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4659 Brockton Road, Jefferson, Georgia 30549.
