Laurie Maxwell Gowen

Laurie Maxwell Gowen of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta. Laurie's heart failed after a 12 year struggle with heart disease. Born June 21, 1965, in Washington, Georgia, she was the daughter of Minan Blanchard Maxwell and the late James Edgar Maxwell, Jr. She graduated from the Medical College of Georgia with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Laurie worked as an RN at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Atlanta for 18 years, a school nurse in Forsyth County, and later worked as an RN at Northside Forsyth Hospital. She was a member of Cumming First United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer for the Forsyth Chapter of The Mended Hearts.

She is survived by her husband, David Gary Gowen, and two children, Julia Elizabeth Gowen, 16, and Grant Maxwell Gowen, 12. She is also survived by siblings, James Edgar Maxwell, III, Jere Lin Maxwell Hutter and brother-in-law, Bruce, and John Blanchard Maxwell and sister-in-law, Shanna, all of Covington, Georgia. Laurie is also survived by mother and father-in-law, Glenda Gibson Gowen and James Gary Gowen of Folkston, Georgia, sister-in-law Susan Gowen McKnight and husband, Paul, and brother-in-law, Stephen James Gowen and wife, Jamie, all of Duluth, Georgia. Nieces and nephews include Wes Hutter, Kate Hutter, Maddie Maxwell, Gavin Williams, Mia McKnight, Braden McKnight, Libby Gowen, and Will Gowen.


Visitation will be held at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming on Tuesday, August 12, from 5-8 PM and funeral services will be Wednesday, August 13, at Cumming First United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's AFLAC Cancer Unit (www.choa/giving.org) or Fragile Kids Foundation (www.fragilekids.org).
