James Lawton Erwin

James Lawton Erwin, age 84 of Cornelia, Georgia passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Erwin was born on September 23, 1929 in Habersham County; son of the late Ernest and Fannie Erwin Tilson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Mr. Erwin was a member and deacon of Mud Creek Baptist Church, and was retired from Schnadig Corporation with 18 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served his country during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by Frances Ivester Erwin of Cornelia, his loving wife of 63 years. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Judy Marie Erwin, Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law Rickey and Kathy Erwin of Cornelia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janie and Lonnie Baker of Maysville, and Marie and Troy Collins of Carnesville; brother and sister-in-law Tommy and Carolyn Tilson of Homer; Grandson, Heath Caudell; and great-grandson, Cruise Caudell.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 5 at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, in Demorest with Rev. Roy Lee Mitchell and Rev. Louis Fortner officiating.

Interment will follow in Level Grove Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720, the American Legion Post 84, and the Rabun County DAV Chapter 15.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2014.
