James P. "Buck" Cheves, Jr., 90, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday July 17, 2014 at his residence following a period of declining health.
Born August 13, 1923 in Atlanta to the late James P., Sr. and Elizabeth Chumbley Cheves, he lived in Lumpkin County for over 30 years having moved from Sandy Springs. Mr. Cheves attended North Fulton High School and was a graduate of Marist High School and the University of Georgia (Sigma Chi). He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a pilot of B-24s and B-29s. During WW II he served in the Pacific Theater and during the Korean Conflict he was stationed in Japan. He retired as a builder and real estate developer in the Atlanta area after 40 years. Buck was an avid outdoorsman who loved all things in nature. He served as president of the Izack Walton League in the late 1960's. He and his family traveled America, camping and fishing. He retreated to his sanctuary in his beloved North Georgia to become a gentleman farmer and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He married his beloved wife, Ida Lee Solms Cheves of Svannah on October 15, 1949 and she preceded him in death in 2013.
Surviving are his children, James Parks "Buck" Cheves, III, Dahlonega, Thomas Gilbert and Brenda Cheves, Orlando, FL, Elizabeth Anne "Betsy" and Wayne Smith, Dawsonville; granddaughters and their spouses, Kathryn and Josh MacInnes, Greensboro, NC, Carey Cheves, Orlando, FL, Casey and Jeffrey Jenkins, Carrollton, GA; great granddaughter, Haileigh MacInnes; sisters and brother in law, Elizabeth and Harry Lee, Richmond, VA, Jo Lane Wright, Atlanta; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday July 24, 2014 at 11 o'clock at Arlington Memorial Park.
