Rev. Henry H. Powell, age 90 of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.
Rev. Powell was born November 8, 1923 in Florida to the late Robert Christopher Powell and Lovdie Hancock Powell. He was a Veteran of the United States Army where he received the Bronze Star and was a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church. Rev. Powell began his ministry in Alabama, he pastored many churches in Florida, he was minister for the orphanage in Knoxville, TN; he also pastored many churches in North Georgia including Riverbend Baptist Church, Lula First Baptist Church, Center Baptist Church, Pinetop Baptist Church, Gillsville First Baptist Church and Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Powell was a school teacher and principal for 30 years in both Florida and Georgia. He was preceded in death by his son Michael, daughter Susan, 1 brother and 2 sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Doris Powell, Cleveland; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bob Hightower, Cleveland; sister, Elgene Sanders, Columbia, S.C.; half-brother, Charles Powell, Idaho; grandchildren and spouses, Mindy and Marvin Reed; Emily and Jody Abercrombie; Matthew and Emily Hightower; great grandchildren, Jaron Jordan, Ben Jordan, Adan Roark, Elliott Marvin, Jacob Warren, Maggie Warren, Sarah Abercrombie, Kendall Hightower.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Cleveland First Baptist Church. Dr. Mike Davis, the Rev. Doug Merck and the Rev. Dennis Turner will officiate. Interment will follow at Yonah View Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
