Herman Abner Buffington

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. Herman Abner Buffington, age 88 of Jefferson, Georgia who entered into rest, Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Mr. Buffington was born in Rome, Georgia the son of the late Abner Cyrenius and Essie Green Buffington, was a member of the Jefferson First United Methodist Church, a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific Theatre, including Okinawa and Saipan. Mr. Buffington was the President of Mainstreet Newspapers, the parent company of several local newspapers.

Survivors and spouses include his wife, Helen, two sons, Michael Herman Buffington and Scott Lee Buffington and Wendy all of Jefferson; four grandchildren, Brittany Buffington Truelove and Taylor, Martin Lee Buffington and Brittany, Blair Michael Buffington and Clark Thomas Buffington all of Jefferson, two step-grandsons, Jonathon David Nix and James Joshua Nix, Jefferson; three great-grandchildren, Axle Lee Buffington, Macy Mae and Max Henley Truelove, all of Jefferson, two brothers, C.D. "Tim" and Edward Buffington both of Rome; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Taylor Toles, Jr., Jefferson. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Jefferson First United Methodist Church, 188 Martin Street, Jefferson, Georgia 30549.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 15, 2014 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Laskey and Minister Tom Plank officiating with burial to follow in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson, Georgia with Military Honors. Marty Buffington, Blair Buffington, Clark Buffington, Jimmy Buffington, Taylor Truelove, Jonathon Nix, Josh Nix, Steve Hollis and Julius Mack will be honored as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the American Legion and employees of Mainstreet Newspapers. The family will receive friends 5-6 P.M. Tuesday prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
