Asa Talmadge Autry

Asa Talmadge Autry, 95, of Gainesville, died Saturday July 12, 2014, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. He was born September 19, 1918 to the late Asa Gwinn and Clyde Maxey Autry. He attended school in Watkinsville, GA, Candler St, Gainesville and graduated from Monroe High School.

Mr. Autry enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 1938, mobilized November 25, 1940, and served in the U.S. Army 214th coast artillery anti-aircraft during WWII in the Aleutian Islands, Adak and Amchitka. Asa served over seven years, and was discharged as Sergeant in October of 1945.

On June 29, 1952 Asa married the love of his life, Grace Cronic Autry, having just celebrated 62 years of marriage last month.

For 27 years, Asa hosted the 214th regimental reunion, and veterans from all over the United States attended. He was the perfect host and enjoyed seeing his comrades and reminiscing the old WWII days.

Asa was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church, Angler SS Class, Masonic Lodge 219, and Lanier Shrine Club, served as Chaplain, member of Yaarah Temple, American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, and former member of First Christian Church where he served as deacon, elder and chairman of the board.

Asa was a great lover of Southern Gospel Music, he recorded many singing conventions and shared them with others.

In addition to his parents, Asa is preceded in death by his sisters, Louis Autry Carnes, Agnes Autry Redmon, and Carolyn Autry Bowden. Brothers-In-Law; Clyde Cronic Jr., George W. Cronic, Frank M. Cronic. Sisters-In-Law; Bess Cronic and Runette Cronic.

Mr. Autry is survived by his wife, Grace Cronic Autry, of Gainesville. Nephew; Billy (Teresa) Bowden of Hawaii, Sister-In-Law; Joyce Cronic (Tom) Lott, of Cleveland, GA. and Treva Cronic of Maysville, GA. Brother-In-Law; John W. (Doris) Cronic, of Clermont, GA, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday July 14 from 5-8 P.M. at Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday July 15 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church, Gainesville. Rev. Bill Coates officiating. Interment will follow at Alta Vista Cemetery.
